Mental Health Awareness Week: MAK shares simple ways to look after your mental wellbeing

At MAK Community Care, we believe mental health is something to care for every day—not just when life feels tough. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re encouraging everyone to take small, everyday steps to look after their mental wellbeing, just like we do with our physical health.
Good mental health doesn’t mean feeling happy all the time. It’s about being able to cope when things get tricky, enjoying the good moments, and feeling able to connect with the people and world around you. The good news? There are lots of little things we can all do to help ourselves feel that bit better—now and in the future.
Here are seven simple tips from all of us at MAK to support your mental wellbeing:
- Reframe unhelpful thoughts
We all get stuck in negative thinking sometimes. Try to notice when this happens—and gently challenge those thoughts. A small shift in mindset can really boost how you feel. - Be in the moment
Taking a pause and really noticing what’s around you, whether it’s the feel of your feet on the ground or the sound of birds outside—can help calm the mind and bring a sense of perspective. - Prioritise sleep
Good sleep is essential for your mental (and physical) health. Try to wind down before bed and stick to a routine—your mind will thank you for it. - Stay connected
Spending time with people you care about, checking in with someone, or even having a quick chat with a neighbour can make a big difference. Connection helps us feel supported and seen. - Keep it healthy
Moving your body, eating well, getting outside – these all play a part in how we feel. And small changes, like drinking less caffeine or cutting down on smoking, can lift your mood too. - Do something for you
Make space for the things you love, whether that’s a hobby, learning something new, or just taking a breather. Doing what makes you happy is an important part of feeling well. - Write to your future self
When things are going well, write down what’s helping. If things get harder later on, you’ll have a little reminder of the things that keep you grounded and hopeful.
At MAK, we support people across our communities every day and we know that mental health is at the heart of everything. This week is a great reminder that it’s the small things, done often, that can really make a difference.
Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s support each other. And let’s always lead with kindness.
